January Birthdays: Why Funfetti Feels Like the Right Place to Start

This post is part of my Birthday Bakes by Month series — a year-long celebration of flavor, nostalgia, and the emotions we attach to the desserts that mark our lives.

January has always felt like a fresh page.

Not loud. Not flashy. Just… open.

This year, I wanted to start something new — a slow, intentional series that celebrates birthdays not just with dessert, but with meaning. Each month, I’ll be baking something that feels right for that season of the year and the people born into it. Not based on trends, but on feeling.

And for January, the answer felt obvious.

Funfetti.

At first glance, it might seem unexpected. January is quiet. Cozy. Reset-heavy. But funfetti has a way of doing something special — it brings color into neutral spaces. It reminds us that celebration doesn’t have to be loud to be joyful.

January birthdays are often overlooked. Tucked between holidays, resolutions, and fresh starts. Funfetti says, you still get confetti. You still get candles. You still get something sweet that feels like a pause just for you.

This cake isn’t about perfection. It’s about nostalgia. About boxed cake mixes spruced up in familiar kitchens. About licking frosting off a spoon and letting sprinkles fall where they may.

That’s what January feels like to me.

A little messy. A little hopeful. Still learning what this year will become.

I’m not baking these with big resolutions in mind. I’m baking them intentionally — choosing recipes that feel comforting, familiar, and worth coming back to. This is my way of celebrating the year ahead without rushing it.

So if you’re a January baby, this one’s for you 🤍
And if you’re not — maybe it’s a reminder that joy doesn’t have an expiration date.

I’d love to hear from you:

  • If you were born in January, does funfetti feel right to you?
  • What dessert reminds you of your birthday growing up?
  • Do you associate birthdays more with cake… or something else entirely?

Next month, we’ll move into February — and a completely different kind of sweetness.

From my table to yours,
Amy
