One of my favorite ways to bring decorated cookies to life is by adding painted highlights. It’s a simple little trick, but it can make a cookie look like sunlight is reflecting off the icing.
I wanted this watermelon float cookie to look like it was already relaxing in the pool. Those white highlights give the illusion of sunshine dancing across the surface, and the best part is that you only need a few inexpensive supplies.
Supplies You’ll Need
- White gel food coloring
- A small detail brush
- A plastic paint palette
I love using the inexpensive plastic paint palettes found in the craft section at dollar stores. They’re perfect for mixing tiny amounts of color and are easy to clean.

How to Make Cookie Paint
Use your detail brush and the white gel food coloring to paint thin lines where the sun would naturally hit the float.
Where to Add Highlights
Think about where sunlight would naturally hit the cookie.
On this watermelon float cookie, I added highlights:
- Along the top of each watermelon section
- Around the outer edge of the float
- On the long center piece
You don’t need much. A few brush strokes can add depth and movement, making the cookie feel bright and summery.
My Favorite Part
I love details like this because they transform a flat design into something that feels playful and alive. Little touches are often what make decorated cookies feel extra special.
And the best part? You don’t need fancy supplies or expensive equipment to achieve the look.
Sometimes all it takes is a tiny brush, a little white gel color, and a few minutes of creativity.
