French Onion Grilled Cheese (Elevated Game Day Food Series)

There’s something about grilled cheese that already feels like comfort.

But when you take the deep, rich flavors of French onion soup and tuck them inside crispy, buttery sourdough with melty Gruyère… it becomes something you can proudly serve on a party platter.

This is part of my Elevated Game Day Food Series — recipes that are still easy, still familiar, but feel just a little more special when you set them out for guests.

Because game day food doesn’t have to be complicated to feel thoughtful.

It just needs to be warm, cozy, and made with intention.

And this sandwich? It checks all the boxes.

Why This Works So Well for a Party

Most people don’t expect grilled cheese on a party table — which is exactly why this works.

The sweet, slow-caramelized onions paired with nutty Gruyère give it that rich French onion flavor everyone loves, but in a handheld, shareable way that’s perfect for guests grazing throughout the game.

It’s cozy food, turned party food.

Recipe: French Onion Grilled Cheese

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • Butter + olive oil
  • Thyme (optional)
  • Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • Sourdough bread

How to Make

  1. In a pan over low heat, cook the onions in butter and olive oil. Let them slowly caramelize — this takes time, but the flavor is worth it. Stir occasionally until they turn deep golden brown and sweet.
  2. (Optional) Add a little thyme while they cook for extra depth.
  3. Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread.
  4. On the unbuttered side, layer Gruyère cheese and a generous scoop of caramelized onions.
  5. Top with another slice of bread and grill in a pan over medium-low heat until the bread is golden and crispy and the cheese is perfectly melted. I have a cute video on how to make on Tiktok @amyatthetable

How to Cut These for a Party Platter

This is where the magic happens for serving.

Instead of serving whole sandwiches:

  • Let them rest for 2–3 minutes after grilling.
  • Use a sharp knife to cut each sandwich into four triangles or long strips.
  • Stand them up slightly on the platter so guests can easily grab one.
  • If you want to be extra thoughtful, secure each piece with a toothpick.

Now they look like intentional party food instead of just a sandwich.

What to Serve This With

These pair perfectly with yesterday’s recipe in the series:

👉 Brown Butter Buffalo Chicken Meatballs

The rich, cheesy sandwich balances the bold buffalo sauce beautifully, and together they make a cozy, elevated game day spread that feels impressive without being difficult.

Add a small bowl of chips or pickles to the platter and you have a complete game day board.

A Cozy Hosting Tip

You can caramelize the onions earlier in the day and keep them in the fridge. When guests arrive, all you have to do is assemble and grill the sandwiches fresh.

Warm. Crispy. Melty. Effortless.

From my table to yours,
Amy
