Every Christmas in our house, there’s one tradition that never changes: cake balls.
They aren’t fancy. They aren’t complicated. But they’re expected. And loved. And honestly? They’re one of my favorite things we make all year.
And every year, without fail, I grab the same thing from the store — a box of chocolate cake mix.
Not because I don’t know how to bake from scratch… but because traditions don’t need to be complicated to be special.
What does make a difference is how you treat that box cake once you get it home.
Over the years, I’ve learned a few simple swaps that turn a basic box mix into something rich, bakery-style, and perfect for cake balls, cupcakes, or layered cakes. These are the same upgrades I use every single holiday — and honestly, all year long.
The Simple Upgrades I Always Use
1. Melted butter instead of oil
This is the biggest flavor upgrade. Butter adds richness and depth that oil just can’t. I melt it gently and let it cool slightly before mixing it in — nothing fancy, just better flavor.
2. Whole milk instead of water
Water does the job, but milk makes the cake tender and moist. Whole milk is best here, especially for chocolate cake. It gives the crumb that soft, bakery-style texture.
3. One extra egg
That extra egg adds structure and richness, which is especially helpful when you’re turning cake into cake balls or stacking layers. The cake holds together better without feeling dry.
That’s it. No secret ingredients. No complicated steps. Just small changes that make a big difference.
Why I Love Doing It This Way
This is one of those quiet traditions that feels very “us.”
I don’t need to reinvent the recipe every year. I don’t need perfection. I just want something familiar that tastes really, really good — something we can make together without stress.
There’s something comforting about taking a shortcut and making it your own.
And I think that applies to more than just baking.
You don’t always need to start from scratch. Sometimes you just need to adjust what you already have — gently, intentionally — until it works better for you.
At the end of this post, I’ll share exactly how I use this upgraded cake to make our Christmas cake balls. You can save it, tweak it, or make it part of your own tradition — no pressure, no perfection required.
Just something sweet, made your way. 🤍
